How to Play the Intro for "Virtue" by Jesse Cook
In this lesson, we work through the introduction to “Virtue” by Jesse Cook, taking it one measure at a time so nothing feels rushed or confusing. This piece is a great example of how flamenco-influenced technique can be used in a modern, melodic context, blending classical-style phrasing with strong thumb articulation and expressive slides.
We begin by looking closely at the half-barre shape on the treble strings and why it’s the most efficient way to fret this passage. From there, we focus on right-hand coordination, using pulgar (thumb) with index (i) and middle (m) in a controlled alternating pattern. This thumb-finger balance is essential for clarity, tone, and rhythmic consistency.
As the lesson progresses, we work through position changes, ghost notes, slides on the second string, and melodic transitions that require relaxed but accurate left-hand placement. You’ll also see how to manage repeated sections and navigate the alternate ending smoothly.
